Netflix, Disney+ will be soon running very fast with speed never before and with internet data least used.

While you watch a video or listen to a song on computer or mobile device, it completely depends on the “Codec”. Codec bascially does the Compression and decompression of the Data Stream.

Now, some codecs do better than others in terms of preserving the quality of the file and some are not able to withstand the complete data stream.

Ideally codecs are aimed to provide the best quality at the lowest bitrate possible.

JPEG for images, MP3 for audio and MPEG-4 and H.264/AVC for videos are commonly used codecs.

Recently, Fraunhofer has just announced H.266/ VVC (Versatile Video Coding).
The developers of H.266 / VVC, claim that this codec will provide the same quality of video at almost half bit-rate compared to the previous standard of Codec.

So for example, Videos requiring 1 Gigabytes of data to stream will now require only 500 megabytes to stream.

Other big changes the codec could make are:

It will make 4K and 8K streaming viable and economical.
So the 4K and 8K videos could be streamed easily.

It will also automatically boost the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality world in near future.

Also we saw the importance of codec of such standard in the pandemic time. Netflix, Disney and other video streaming flat had to decrease the streaming standard/ quality just to fulfill the ever increasing demand of video stream in the pandemic.

Adding to it Fraunhofer said the processors required for H. 266 are currently being designed to be placed into mobile devices. And it probably won’t be supported on the devices you have now.
