Have you ever thought how the touchscreen display of a mobile phone or any other electronic gadgets work? Have you ever differentiated between touchscreen where one works with any objects and other works with bare human hands or stylus. This is because different touchscreen display technology works on different principles.

There are mainly two types of touchscreen display technologies used frequently. And they are:

1) RESISTIVE TOUCHSCREEN DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY:

This technology uses mainly two materials, one is conductive and other is resistive material. The conductive layer is constantly supplied with current. Now when you touch the screen (or literally press the screen), the resistive layer and the conductive layer comes in contact with each other hence, bringing difference in voltage drop on that point. The software understands what is selected by examining the position of touch on the screen plane (by locating it’s coordinates on x and y axis ) and then performs related function on your device.

It can be thought of working due to pressure applied on the screen. You would have observed that the screen bends at that point of contact.
So, as it mainly depends upon the pressure you apply to the screen, that is the reason why you can use any object as to get your work done.

This type of touchscreen displays are mainly used in ATMs and mall kiosks.

2) CAPACITIVE TOUCHSCREEN DISPALY TECHNOLOGY:

Capacitive touchscreens takes amount of charge flowing into account. Wherein, the human hands or any of the charge carrying body when touches the surface, the surface experiences some change in the charge (by movement of charge carries), thus software than looks for the location of the change occurred and then does the function assigned at that coordinates.

This type of touchscreen display technology is used in Smartphones.
